The Grove echoes back to another time in many states when the first semi-public card rooms existed very often on a "tolerence" basis and were commonly in a back room in taverns. The Grove is, of course, totally modern--with trained center dealers, automatic shufflers, and a standard rake--but it still has something of the refreshingly raucous atmosphere of that other era.

Omaha 8 is played 3/6 with a full kill. Games, I am told, start regularly seven days a week at 10AM. Hold-em is normally spread at 4/8 with a kill and on Saturdays at 10/20 with a half-kill. Evening games might not always materialize, so calling ahead would be a good idea. But when they do, they often go until 6AM and commonly have the features I have tried to indicate above: with lots of jammed pots and abnormal amounts of patience needed.
Cardroom Quality: A small cardroom with four tables, comfortable seating, good lighting, and a space somewhat separate and insulated from the tavern and pool tables.
Player Level: Some very good, many less well endowed.
Dealers: Mixed, like the players described above.
Food and Drink: I did not test the food, but it looked and smelled like very good road-house fare. The kitchen goes twenty-four hours.
Management: Young, energetic, and, I think, quite competent.
Extras: I was asked if I would like something from the kitchen: an extraordinary event given current cardroom standards.

There are bad-beat jackpots for both Omaha 8 and Hold-em. High hands are paid-off on a progressive scale which increases during the day. I was present for a $2,000 royal flush payout, and quads for $100, both at Omaha.
